It is the beginning of the Stargate franchise. It was originally intended as the first of a trilogy of films, but creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin moved on from developing the sequels and produced Independence Day. Instead, it inspired the television series Stargate SG-1, which concluded its ten-year run in 2007, as well as its spin-off, Stargate Atlantis, and other related media. Two straight-to-DVD Stargate SG-1 movies are being filmed as of 2007.
